Sharing a birthday with a special friend

September 14, 2019

Ed, and his wife Goldie have been friends of Kent’s family when he was young, Ed also was Kent’s Sunday school teacher as a child. So he has known them for years. Ed and Goldie were never able to have children because she had MS many years ago, but we were the blessed ones as they sort of adopted our family! They love our kids, nd grandkids too.

A few years ago Goldie’s mental condition worsened and Ed with the help of hospice nurses found a great place for her to live. Goldie has wonderful caregivers and Ed visits her three times a week.

He had broken his hip in March and had recovered well, but had a knee on the same leg that gave him a great deal of pain and made it very difficult to walk much.

We knew Ed’s Birthday was coming up and we wanted to do something special with him. When we asked him, he said that he would like to take a drive to see Mt Baker. Mt Baker is the local snow capped mountain that is about one hours drive from where we are living. It is 10,781 feet but the fact that it is so close to the coast.. it is a massive mountain with its base starting at almost sea level. It actually has two mountains, with Mt Shuskan on the east side of Mt Baker. It is a beautiful drive and with good weather you could see a long way.

At the top of the mountain there is a place to park, but no place to get food so I packed a picnic lunch and the picnic tables were hard to get to, sooo we ate in our car! Also once we reached the top we saw a dozen old cars there. When we got out to stretch our legs we walked over to look at them. They were all Dodge Brothers cars( early Dodge cars). Ed and Kent knew about them and as we walked around and talked to the owners we found out they were having a rally and had decided to drive to the top of Mt Baker too. It was fun for Ed to visit with these folks too as they enjoyed these old cars together.

You can do some climbing and hiking at the top and most do. And Ed and his wife Goldie have many times. But today Ed was content to look and see.

It was a wonderful day for this drive and a special friend to spend this time with.

Happy Birthday, Ed!

Helping Kent’s mom around the farm and sorting

September 13, 2019

After our trip with our oldest grandson Silas to New York, we came back to Kent’s Mom’s house in Washington state, where our RV house is parked. Kent’s oldest brother, Ron and wife, Jan had driven their truck and camper to the farm. They had helped his sister LeAnn with Mom’s move to an assisted living place.

After Mom’s move, Ron was wanting to sort through papers and pictures to find proofs of Mom’s employment with the War Intelligence department during World War II. Well, it was quite an adventure and each day we found “treasures. ” we did find the poofs, which we needed. We also found many other precious things, such as love letters between her and dad and many pictures that we had not seen before!

Some of the old pictures and also a drawing of dad, done by mom!

We are enjoying this ” treasure hunt!”
