Another very special trip, Thorne Bay, Alaska

In thinking of our 40th year in missions that we celebrated last year, we also wanted to get back to South East Alaska where we ministered and lived in the early 80’s. It had been about 20 years since we had been there so it took a bit of planning. We did finally have our plans made and reservations done and tickets purchased. We flew once again through Seattle and so were graciously hosted by Kent’s first cousin Denny and wife Jeri, whom we dearly love!

So flying from Seattle to Ketchikan and then hopping on a float plane, (similar to what Kent used to fly). We flew to Thorne Bay. It was a logging camp that then turned to a town. It was about 500 in the camp days with families living there and stores etc to care for their needs. We found the town some changed from our last visit. Still population is about 500 but only a little private logging going on. Some fishing and mostly tourism is the main industry now. Tourists one for an Alaskan experience of fishing and some hunting and some even hiking etc.

We got to stay with friends that we have known since we lived in Ketchikan. They now run a bed and breakfast so we had wonderful accommodations and great foo while in Thorne Bay! It was fun to hear about their lives nd even meet some of their family that lives in Thorne Bay too! They even leant us their truck so we could explore a bit.

We were so excited to see the church and meet the many new people there. The pastor allowed Kent to speak and he was well received. Pastor Ron and wife Mary were so wonderful and even hosted a bunch of us for a picnic and then a walk around a lake on Sunday. God gave us such wonderful weather and we loved that walk! here is a picture of the lake!

And a picture of some of the group on the boardwalk that was our walkway part of the walk.

We really enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. We were so encouraged by our time with the people of the Church of Thorne Bay.

After 5 days we got back on a float plane and flew back to Ketchikan for a week there! We had even better weather flying back. This planes brings the mail and many other packages several times a day to Thorne Bay as well as passengers!

Here is a video of the beautiful Prince of Wales Island and especially around Thorne Bay. Just click on this link. Enjoy!
