Traveling some more

We left Oregon and started south to California but stayed on the eastern side of the Sierra Mountains. It should have been a beautiful drive…but the fires this summer and therefore the smoke from them impeded most of the views of the Sierras. Also because of Covid many museums etc were not open. We traveled on highway CA 395. We do WANT to go back someday.

Since the places that were open were the parks and we decided to go and see the Bristlecone Pine Forest near Bishop. I had seen brochures about this park and was very excited to see them! Apparently these trees are some of the oldest in the world. They were very interesting for sure!

We had to drive up to the Bristlecone Pine forest which was at over 10,000 feet elevation but where we had stayed the night was 4,150 feet. So it was quite a climb and our little Smart car did great! At about 9,000 feet we stopped and took a short hike. It felt like we were on top of the world although these pictures don’t show the awesomeness of this view. We could see several mountain ranges.

We walked to the edge to get this picture!

After we got to the top, there were several hikes you could take. We decided to do the 1 mile hike. As we climbed there was additional 300 feet elevation, and at some points quite a climb. I was a bit winded at the top, but it was a great view of these old trees! The trees are very gnarly and very old. Think of all they had to survive at this altitude over 10,000 feet elevation and it is believed that they are some of the oldest trees in the world.

The walk down on the path had some places where it was actually more than a little precarious! If you slipped off the path, there was nothing to stop you from falling several hundred feet! I must say I was very glad to be down but still was very glad to have done the climb!

This forest is a must see for people that love trees!

Jan, I was having trouble with my last e-mail to you it probably did not make sense. I had to call Rick to get things fixed.

I was trying to tell you that I think it is wonderful that you and Kent are able to go and see so many places, while you are still young

enough to enjoy and are able. The time goes so very fast when one of you gets to the point that you don’t feel up to traveling

anymore. That is what happened with Sam and I. He just got to the point when he did not feel like going away anymore.

Enjoy all you can while you are both able. Love hearing about what is going on in your life.
