More great visits with dear friends

September 21, 2018

This next visit was with friends that we met 42 years earlier. When Kent was training as a missionary pilot so were these men as well. Jan and Jim invited us and the other couple, Don and Claudelle to come and have a mini reunion at their home.

It was so fun to be all together and sharing what God had done in our lives. We had all visited each other some over the years but since we were from different parts of the country all three couples had not been together in one place for 42 years.

We did drive around to see the airport where the guys took their training and even Jim worked there for many years as well after some time in Brazil doing missionary flying. We drove to one of the local earthen dams and right by where we had lived for 2 1/2 years. Our little old house had been torn down and nice log house replaced it. It was fun to see the old neighborhood though. We also drove to see how the downtown had changed since we lived there. Not a lot had changed , although some different businesses in the stores than we had known. And everywhere we went we would stop and chat a bit as well.

Our time with the others came to a halt much sooner than I would have liked but we were scheduled to speak in our church there that had supported us for many years. So way too soon, Kent and I were leaving these dear friends again. Don and Claudelle stayed a bit longer and I was so glad they were free to do so.

God blessed us all with a wonderful fun time.. I only regretted not being able to set off fireworks as a bunch of the students had done at Don and Claudelle’s house many years earlier…

We are so grateful for these dear friends and maybe when we all get to heaven we will get to hear more of the stories of their lives as well.

Renewing acquaintances

September 20, 2018

42 years ago we met two couples who were also studying to be missionary pilots. We really loved these couples and have kept in touch over these intervening years BUT we hadn’t all been together since then..

So knowing that Kent and I would be in Tennessee where I thought they both lived near each other.. I contacted them to see if we could have a mini reunion. I had planned it in another city from where we had all lived, but when they got back with me..one of the couples had moved back to our original city where we had met and the guys had studied. Wow, and that couple even invited us all to come to their house to visit there. It was a little like when we all were there 42 years ago..without kids and just learning a lot of life and missions.

So that is what we all did. It was so fun to stay together and to hear the stories of the other couples and their lives since. We have maintained some contact but all of us hadn’t heard the way God had worked in each of the couples lives. It was interesting to hear and some of it was sad, as there were many hard thins the one couple had had to go through. It was so wonderful to hear of God’s healing and blessings on them since.

We also went to places around the town that we used to go to and just some places of interest and to the airport where the guys had studied.

I must say that I was sad to leave them all but we know we will see each other I heaven someday if not here on this earth. It was a wonderful time and thanks Jan and Jim for hosting us!

So grateful for these special friends!

More visits with friends, family and supporters!

September 7, 2018

Our last month in Pennsylvania was filled with many more visits. 36 visits this month alone but in total over 75 visits while parked in Pennsylvania. We are so grateful for this time.

We also made a few more short trips. One to visit friends in New Jersey…the farming part. Our friends there had moved to a different house and we were glad to see that and be able to see two of their grown up kids.

We also go to visit some old family friends of my whole family. My family had lived beside this family before I was born, as my father worked in heavy construction and had helped build the older portion of the New Jersey turnpike. But we also had visited them throughout my childhood. Our whole family would come for the July 4th weekend and have a blast together. I had reconnected with this family back in the 90’s and have kept in touch since. It is always fun to meet up with them.

In driving from one friend to another we also got to stop and see the ocean for a bit.. we also stopped in Ocean City, NJ where I went a time or two as a teen. I had a lot of fun but also went because Youth for Christ had meetings and I grew spiritually too! Good memories!

We also had lived in central New Jersey when we were first married…on our way back to our RV house we drove by our first house. We also had worked with a small church in a rough section of Philadelphia while we were students at Philadelphia College of Bible. We went through that area of the city as well and were glad to know the church is still doing well. So this trip had a lot of nostalgia in it.

You can see that Kent took a picture of me standing by the ocean… it was so pleasant! I just love the ocean and enjoyed this little respite!

A fun excursion

June 29, 2018

My mother’s siblings have gotten together for lunch once a month for about 10 years now. It is always fun to meet up with them at these lunches. Several of the siblings are finding it harder to come as my moms closest sister is over 90 and one brother too. So these special lunches are a real treat!

I did mention to my two aunts present at the last lunch that I wanted to know if any of them liked gardens like my grandmother, their mother did. My aunt Ethel immediately said she did! And in fact there was going to be a garden tour near me the next week! I said “ let’s go together!” And so it was settled.

We had a great time and went to 8 different gardens. I also enjoyed the older stone houses on the properties. There are so many old houses from around 1700’s in this area. We were a bit disappointed that there were less flowers blooming but that was due to the rainy weather this spring and not the owner’s fault.

We still had an enjoyable day with lunch in the middle to visit a bit more! I was so glad as I haven’t had time over the years to get to know Aunt Ethel all that much so this was a treat!

A little rest and change in plans

May 3, 2018

Kent had planned for us to “rest” for a bit after the last few hectic weeks! After leaving his aunt’s place we went to some BLM land that anyone can park on for free for up to 14 days. We have parked in BLM land near here before but not this place. As he pulled off the road so early in the day, I asked what he had in mind…and he told me ” A few days of rest!” I was elated! As I was feeling pretty tired too.

Our camping place:

Now when we ” camp” like this, it usually means reading a lot (Kent read 4 books and me two one of which was really big!) and minimal meals and sometimes Kent even cooks over our fire… But rest! I also wanted to burn some old papers. So a fire was a must one day. We only had one once because of the wind most days.

Our fire:

We also met another couple camping there and had them over for some conversation. We meet some of the most interesting people.

Well, because it had been soooo hot in Phoenix (nearly 100 degrees) I had not baked Kent any cookies for a long time..so that was one of my goals as well.

So we had three quiet days..and then the fourth day was very windy. Well, our rig doesn’t do well in high winds soo, we got to stay put another day.

So on the 5th day though, we were anxious to get on the road… we were all ready to pull out when Kent said there is something wrong with my truck… opps!

We do have mobile truck service and so called them. Thankfully we were only 10 miles from Flagstaff. If this had happened the next day, we would have been hundreds of miles from the nearest big city to find a truck repair place. So right away, Kent unhooked the RV house and left me to be there while he tried to get the help our truck needed. After several hours, Kent came back with a tow truck and they towed the truck back to town for repairs. Kent looked up some old friends and they got me and they hosted us for the evening meal, which was very sweet of them.

Kent went back to the truck repair place and realized that the truck wasn’t going to be fixed that day, so we went back to our RV house for the night. The next day, after a few hours of waiting for parts to come and be installed, we realized that the truck wouldn’t be done soon. We had to get to Denver for Kent to fly out to Portland, Oregon… so. We found someone to tow our RV house to a safe place for about a week. The truck repair facility was willing to allow us to park it there, so that was where someone so kind, towed it for us for FREE.

We felt God surrounding us with Christians to encourage us! We make our plans BUT GOD directs our steps… so our plans had to change and we were looking for why God had directed us to make different plans.

Watch for the next blog….

Grateful,

Church camp out

August 22, 2017

Kent and I have been trying to help a church here in the Seattle area this summer. Kent has met with the pastors and some others and has been trying to help them think through the next big mission project they are wanting to do.

Two weekends ago the church went on a camp out. They rented a huge campground not too far from the church with pool, lake and all kinds of fun activities. We decided to join them in our own RV house but to be a part of it. Kent and I love camps and camping so this was great.

We had a main speaker who challenged us with God’s Word and principles to apply to our lives and we also had small groups to talk about what we learned. We had fun games and some free time and ended with a service where people came from the church but who had not stayed for the weekend and then 15 people got baptized in the lake. It was an awesome time and now I am sad to think of leaving this amazing group of believers in Christ. But we still had two weeks with them and then we will be moving to our next place. We so enjoyed this church body though and this weekend helped make that more so!

Our family together!

August 12, 2017

We  love anticipating and planning for our family to get together. This summer another neice got married, this time in Washington state near Kent’s parents. So it gave us the opportunity of seeing our neice’s wedding and mom and dad Reimer as well.

So we rented a house in Birch Bay near a beach for our two grandsons to play at the beach.  It had enough room for all of us and it was close to the beach.

We picked up everyone at the airport but three hours apart so Kara, Ivan and Silas came first. Silas had spent a few days with Kara, Nick and Ivan in Denver. Silas flew with Kara and Ivan to Seattle. So we went for food and then to a park waiting for Josh and Teresa to arrive. Nick had to work until Friday and would be joining us then.

After we got everyone, we drove back to where our RV house is parked and our friends, Bruce and Melody allowed our family to stay in their guesthouse for one night. That was so nice and that also gave all of them a chance to get to know one another a bit. Bruce and Melody had also allowed us to use their minivan to get around in. What a treat!

So we took off driving to Birch Bay and since this minivan was equipped with a DVD player, we watched and listened to and sang along with the Sound of Music video. It was fun and reminiscent of our kid’ childhood a bit.  We had wonderful sunny weather and could see Mt Rainier and Mt Baker as well as all the other mountains along the way. It was fun just to be together and hear our adult children talking and all in the same place for a time! We were our son in law Nick but knew he’d be coming soon!

We checked into our house and then went to the beach..it was only a short walk. It is a tidal beach so twice in 24 hours you have a lot of watered high tide and twice you have low tide. So it was fun watching the boys play in the stones and looking for shells and rocks and clams. Kent even fried up clams and Ivan especially enjoyed them.

Our rental also had a Xbox with video games so we also enjoyed playing them as well.  It was fun to see how hard it was to bowl, race cars etc on this game. Fun watching Silas and Ivan playing it too!

We had a few days to enjoy each other and we saw our dear friend Ed K who lives in the area. Ed is like another grandfather to our kids. My neice, Jana came for a visit too. She had not seen our son and family for 10 years.

We had family events and the wedding to attend so that is in the next blog.

Check out this video for lots of fun pictures:

Gardens tour

August 11, 2017

Melody and I decided to continue our fun by doing a garden tour the Saturday after our beach trip.  We both love gardens so this was another treat for both of us!

Meldoy bought the tickets and we were all set to go on Saturday morning. She had a great idea to start at house and garden #4 first. It was a great idea!  That allowed us to talk with the owners more as we were there alone at first. We loved all of the gardens but the first one was our favorite one.

There were two gardens beside each other as it was mother and daughter living beside each other. Apparently it was the family farm that the daughter built a new house in some of it. Her parents still lived next door. But Diane and her husband had done a ton of work to carve out these garden areas all around their house. She even had a wooden carving of Bigfoot that was 10 feet tall in her back garden, although I didn’t get a picture of him!

The next garden we went to was her mother’s right next door. Moms garden was older and she had given a ton of starts to her daughter. Mom does some small dish gardens that are given to be auctioned off. So some of her best work was gone as there had been an auction the night before.

She had some bonsai type trees and lots of flowering plants around her yard too. She showed us a large lily blossom and also trumpet flower. I think these were some of her favorites. She also told us about making a huge leaf shaped cement decoration in her garden. She made it herself and it was a wonder!

We had to stop for lunch and went into a small town nearby and ate at a small local restaurant called…. we both had a sandwich and I even got a Huckleberry milkshake as it was available and sounded o good! And it lived up to my expectations  I even talked Melody into tasting it and she said it was good too!

Then back on the road to the next garden, we went to a house that was built in a hill and had a wonderful view of Mt Rainier. The owner was a gardener and a pharmacist. He had done a ton of work around their house as well. But the most interesting to me was his vineyard! He grew a grape that he made into his own wine..a Pinot Gris. He talked at length about how he planted and how he cared for the grapes, even to keeping the birds from eating all the fruit. He and his wife were most interesting and their house, gardens and vineyard were beautiful.

The last garden was also by a house built on a hill again with a view of Mt Rainier. These owners had done a ton of work and they had put in and moved a ton of rock and created beautiful grounds. The wife also does quilting and had some of her quilts displayed through the garden area.

It was a fun garden tour, but there was more! Melody next drove us to the house of some friends of hers. They had a craft fair there and the owners had their own antiques store on the property as well. We walked around looking at the crafts booths and talking to the people. Then Melody took me to see the antique store and we looked around there too. I found a man selling local honey and he was offering tasting. So I tasted a few and again bought a huckleberry honey. Delicious!

The owners and Melody’s friends were talking to her and so I was able to meet them. Very nice people! After awhile I found a place to sit and enjoy the atmosphere. I even enjoyed the live music. Then it was time to go home. What a fun and flower filled day! It was just another fun thing to do with Melody! Thanks, friend!

Beach trip with my Friend, Melody

July 18, 2017

My new friend and our hostess for the summer, Melody loves the beach like me. One day we got talking about how we haven’t been to the beach enough. Melody admitted. That she had not been to a beach for years. So we started to think and plan… and last week our plans came to reality. Melody got us a hotel room and she drove… this little trip was to be a big part of her birthday present from her husband! Hah! Well, I was grateful to be accompanying her as I love the beach anytime, but especially in the summer.

We left their house in the tall evergreen trees and drove out to the Washington coast. We had a delightful drive, feeling a bit giddy with excitement. We had a nice lunch along the way and then drove in down to the coast. We found our hotel and checked in. We then went for a walk around the town to see the shops etc. we talked to shop owners and other locals and asked about good places for meals. We got two recommendations and went to both places while here. We rested a bit at the hotel and then went out to eat at a place called the Depot. I forgot to get pictures. But it was an old train depot and had a really good chef that had delicious food! We then drove to the beach and walked around a bit. It was quite windy and the sun was going down so after a while went back to our hotel room.

After a good sleep and breakfast we headed out to drive to the Oregon coast. We stopped to pick up a sandwhich to eat on the beach and saw some bargains, so we had to shop a little along the way. But we did arrive at Cannon Beach, Oregon and wow! We found a parking place within a short walk of the beach! How wonderful! I was so excited I almost ran down to the beach… the sand was soft and felt good on our feet…so we took a foot picture! Hah! Then we sat in the beach chairs that Melody had brought and read, talked and ate our lunch! Beautiful and restful! Finally I had to go to the bathroom so we left our chairs and then were able to come back a few minutes later and resume our restful time. Then it was time to leave…sad! “Sigh” oh well I hope to get more beach time again! Thanks Melody!

We then went back to hotel and rested and cleaned up and then went to the other recommendation which was called Gelattis. Sounded Italian and looked it online…we ordered Italian and ate Italian…but when the owner came out to mingle with the guests. he told us a different story. They had bought from an Italian but he wasn’t Italian. Still it was very good food! And he was interesting to talk to!

After another good nights sleep and breakfast we headed back but taking a somewhat different route. We took our time and stopped again for lunch and found some deer alongside the road. Eventually we stopped in Centralia that had a bunch of Antique stores. We got into a few but then we decided it was time to head home,

What a fun couple of days and a beach “fix” for both of us until the next time, Happy Birthday Melody! I had a great time! Thanks a ton for arranging and driving!

Bruce and Melody hosted a July 4th party

July 11, 2017

Our hosts( where we are parked this summer) are Bruce and Melody. They have graciously allowed us to park on their property with a beautiful view of Mt Rainier. They decided to host a party for Independence Day. We were graciously invited too.

We had a blast and the party was a huge success! Many of their neighbors, friends came. I think it must have been close to 60 people. Bruce plays in two bands and one of them played for the entertainment. I was able to get a short clip of them singing.

We had a fun day and enjoyed getting to know Bruce and Melody’s neighbors and friends better.
